When I was in the 5th grade, I joined a program called ‘Letter Buddies.’ As one of the older students, I had the fun and rewarding task of teaching kindergarteners their ABCs. This experience sparked something in me—I believe it was the moment my tutoring journey truly began. Fast forward to high school, where during my senior year, I would stay after school in my math teacher’s classroom. Even though I was still mastering College Algebra, my teacher trusted me enough to send struggling students my way, and I quickly became the go-to peer tutor.

Three years later, in 2016, I started my freshman year at Estrella Mountain Community College. It was there, in the student union, that I stumbled upon a simple note that read, ‘Geometry Tutor Wanted.’ That one note changed everything. I helped a fellow student pass their math class and, in the process, discovered a deep passion for Mathematics. This led me to apply for a position at the college’s tutoring center, where I spent about four transformative years, not just improving my math skills but also refining my approach to tutoring.

As my journey continued, I expanded my reach beyond the community college, tutoring students across the country. Each new student brought a unique challenge—different states, different schools, different instructors—but that’s what made it exciting. Adapting to various teaching materials kept every session fresh and interesting, turning each interaction into a new opportunity to grow both as a tutor and a learner.

Hello, I’m Luis, a proud graduate with a Bachelor’s in Microbiology from Arizona State University. My academic journey was anything but ordinary—I had the privilege of diving into diverse research experiences at ASU and other prestigious universities, where I explored everything from cancer research to the fascinating worlds of bacteria and virology. With a couple of years under my belt tutoring Biology, Chemistry, and Microbiology, I’ve discovered a passion for helping others grasp complex scientific concepts. Most recently, I spent 3.5 transformative years in an NGS lab, where I contributed to groundbreaking cancer research and treatment discovery, first as a molecular technologist and then as an application scientist. Science isn’t just what I do; it’s who I am.

Joseph Rihl

I am currently a junior studying Civil Engineering at Arizona State University. I have tutored at my local community college where I received an Associates in Science with an emphasis in engineering for over two years now. In these two years, I have helped tutor everything from pre-algebra to modern differential equations. Though I’ve found my favorite courses to tutor are college algebra, trigonometry, and calculus 1.

Working at the community college, I have come to tutor people of all ages, demographics, and backgrounds, and it has been my absolute pleasure guiding them to understanding their course material and ultimately helping them get a better grade in their math class. I pride myself on working with each student and finding out what ways I can present the material so as to maximize their understanding and comprehension and more importantly contribute to their retention of the material.

My top priority is to give you a conceptual understanding of the material (as opposed to rote memorization). I do this by asking you questions to gauge your understanding. Then I assign tailored problems (often which I make up on the spot) to address the material you don’t understand. I also like to encourage you by pointing out the things you do understand. I am very patient since, unlike most math people, I understand that this stuff isn’t obvious just because I know it! I joke around to keep you entertained while still being intellectually demanding.

Master’s Degree in Physics from University of Pittsburgh

Math is such a special subject. I find it really cool how everything seamlessly fits together and can be used to solve real world problems. Naturally, I have always looked to share this passion and help others realize math’s uniqueness. This is how I got into tutoring math. I started by working at another professional tutoring company where I developed the skills necessary for effective communication with students. I also began a free tutoring program at my school where trained high schoolers tutored middle schoolers. But something unexpected I noticed from these experiences is how simply understanding math can greatly boost a student’s confidence. To be able to fight through confusion and get that “A-HA” moment is a skill that is critical to learn. That is why my goal when tutoring is to not only teach the strategies behind math, but also build the confidence and skills necessary to not only increase productivity in math or other subjects, but in other facets of life. Aside from tutoring, I enjoy drawing and journaling, as well as playing and watching sports, especially baseball!
